CANOLA PERFORMS ACROSS SOUTHERN NSW

It’s been a good year to do paddock gross margins for the bank manager.

The two factor performance of canola with prices as high as $1,000/tonne and yields north of 3 tonnes/ ha (even paddocks going north of 4 tonnes/ ha).

The main limiting factor for canola is generally heat at flowering, especially in western areas under irrigation.

With an amazingly mild spring, some incredible yields where achieved in the Western areas of Southern NSW, with irrigated paddock averages above 3.5 tonnes/ ha reported at Hay and Carrathool.

To the east, rainfall played havoc but the paddock stories were still similarly amazing, with 4 tonne plus crops in the district.

Read about storing canola here.

Wheat yields from North to South NSW have broken records, even with a wet harvest and reduced quality, the overall tonnes produced has been incredible.

Even with a record number of silos going up in 2021, grain bags are a common site across the country side.

It would be interesting to see how ABS have predicted yield and the real figure.

Grain growers are more and more taking control of marketing, and we see this with the on-farm storage story. It would also hide the true national production figures to a degree. Is the recorded production figure even higher? Time will tell.

With 2022 booked solid for silos and handling projects, the record grain production and performance of farming across Australia is having a pronounced flow-on effect.
