Foundations
Optimum Grain Silos & Augers construct the foundations for Cyclone grain silos. These foundations incorporate a step inside the silo to prevent moisture entering the stored grain, as happens regularly with foundations that do not incorporate this step.
Heavy duty unloading augers
Optimum Grain Silos & Augers also manufacture a range of heavy duty unloading augers which incorporate heavy duty sweep augers. This equipment is designed and manufactured in Young NSW. The unloading equipment is innovative, well engineered and far superior to imported equipment. Marketing hassles at harvest time led Roly Dye, “Sunnyside”, Corowa, to put in two 1720-tonne grain silos.
Optimum Grain Silos & Augers, in Young NSW, owned by Peter Murphy, is currently building the silos on the property, which measure 14.5m in diameter, 11m in height and have a 30 degree angled roof.
The silos have a cement base with aeration and built-in, Australian-made augers and sweeps made by B Keogh and Son at Bendigo, Victoria, which can outload 120 tonnes an hour.
The Cyclone silos, which are a business unit of OneSteel, are Australian-made from galvanised BlueScope steel.
Mr Murphy has put in silos for people across Australia for 25 years and in recent months has worked on silos from Balranald to Walgett.
The silos being built on Mr Dye's property were at the larger end of on-farm storage, with most on-farm storage ranging in size from 300 tonne to 1700 tonne, Mr Murphy said.
Mr Dye said he needed a system which could handle 60 tonnes an hour at harvest time.
This year he has 1800 hectares of wheat planted, 900 ha of canola, 800 ha barley and 100 ha of oats.
However, even with the two new silos going in, Mr Dye said he still couldn't store all his grain.
Two-thirds of the wheat crop will be able to be stored in the two new silos and there are other silos and a grain bunker as well.
While being able to store most of his crop on-farm will be a big advantage, the biggest drawback will be grain hygiene and keeping the weevils out, Mr Dye said.
This was why he has included aeration in the silos.
Although it is another expense, the aeration cooled the grain to a temperature where weevils couldn't breed and helped prevent moisture migration.
Last year's investment allowance helped Mr Dye make the decision to put in the large silos.
"I wanted to go with something that was more substantial that would last for a long time," he said.
Mr Murphy said the investment allowance had stimulated some interest and brought forward a few decisions for farmers but things have died down now the allowance finished.
His canola and barley crops will be harvested in mid November and the wheat crop will be harvested at the end of November.
